Mail Help

This site has help on Webmail or office/home mail.

Web mail: Checking online Email

  • The first time you login, change your password by clicking on Change Password (Line below the two icons Horde, SquirrelMail)
  • After logging in you can read your online e-mail using Horde, or SquirrelMail. SquirrelMail is preferable.
  • All of these popular web mail applications allow you to read your e-mail, save them, keep an address book, and perform all of the other basic e-mail functions that you are used to.

SquirrelMail is a full-featured e-mail application. The text below describes the main buttons in SquirrelMail and what they do. This is provided as a summary reference, and not a detailed description of how to use SquirrelMail. If you do not know how to use some of the features, have a look at the SquirrelMail home page.

SquirrelMail functions:

  • Compose - Write a new e-mail message. There are several options available, such as using an address book to choose the recipient(s) of your e-mail, adding attachments, and choosing a signature.
  • Addresses - Stores e-mail addresses of contacts. Click on any e-mail address to create a new e-mail message to that person.
  • Folders - Organize your mail messages into different folders. You can have as many different folder as you want.
  • Options - Set a large number of options on how you use SquirrelMail. Please read the description of a setting carefully before applying it.
  • Search - Search for a particular e-mail message. You can search by any field in the e-mail and search through any folder.
  • Help - Displays the SquirrelMail online help. Please read this help when you have any questions or problems.

Horde is a another full-featured e-mail application. The text below describes the main buttons in Horde and what they do. This is provided as a summary reference, and not a detailed description of how to use Horde. If you do not know how to use some of the features, have a look at the Horde home page.

Horde functions (available from the top menu bar):

  • INBOX icon- Displays your inbox with all your current mail that has not been viewed, moved, or deleted.
  • Compose icon- Write a new e-mail message. There are several options available, such as using an address book to choose the recipient(s) of your e-mail, adding attachments, and using special characters in the e-mail.
  • Folders icon- Organize your mail messages into different folders. You can have as many different folder as you want.
  • Options icon- Set a large number of options on how you use Horde. Please read the description of a setting carefully before applying it.
  • Search icon- Search for a particular e-mail message. You can search by any field in the e-mail and search through any folder.
  • Help icon- Displays the Horde online help. Please read this help when you have any questions or problems.
  • Addressbook icon- Stores e-mail addresses of contacts. Click on any e-mail address to create a new e-mail message to that person.
  • Logout icon- Logs you out of the Horde application. You should always do this when you have finished using Horde.

Additional Horde functions (available from the bottom menu bar):

  • Calendar icon- Displays a calendar on which you can enter events.
  • Memos icon- Create notes for your future reference.
  • Tasks icon- Create a list of tasks that you need to perform.

 

Checking email from office or home

The main difference between web mail and an offline e-mail applications, such as Eudora, Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Outlook Express, is that all of these functions are performed online, rather than on your own computer, and offline applications generally provide more features. The set ups below are done only once.

Configuring Microsoft Outlook Express

  1. Open Microsoft Outlook Express
  2. Click on the Tools menu.
  3. Click on Accounts.
  4. Click the Add button
  5. Select Mail from the menu
  6. Enter your name as you would like it to appear in your emails
  7. Click Next
  8. Enter your email address such as: youremail@lowellgirls.net
  9. Click Next
  10. In Incoming mail server: Enter mail.lowellgirls.net
  11. In outgoing mail server: Enter mail.lowellgirls.net
  12. In Account name: Enter your email youremail@lowellgirls.net
  13. In Password: Enter the password given to you or your recent one if you changed it.
  14. Click Next
  15. Select your account and Click on Properties
  16. Click on Severs tab.
  17. Select My server requires authentication
  18. Click on Settings
  19. Select Log on using
  20. In User Name: Enter your email address such as: youremail@lowellgirls.net
  21. In Password: Enter the password given to you or your recent one if you changed it.
  22. Make sure Remember password is Selected
  23. Click OK
  24. Click on the Connection Tab
  25. Ensure you specify the internet connection you will be using.
  26. Click OK
  27. Click Close
  28. Congratulations. To ensure everything works well, try sending yourself an email.

Configuring Microsoft Outlook

  1. Open Microsoft Outlook
  2. Click on the Tools menu.
  3. Click on Email Accounts.
  4. Specify Add a new e-mail account.
  5. Specify POP3 and click Next
  6. Enter your name
  7. Enter your full email address such as youremail@lowellgirls.net.
  8. In Incoming mail server: Enter mail.lowellgirls.net
  9. In outgoing mail server: Enter mail.lowellgirls.net
  10. In User Name: Enter your email such as youremail@lowellgirls.net
  11. In Password: Enter the password given to you or your recent one if you changed it.
  12. Click on More Settings
  13. Click on the Outgoing Sever Tab
  14. Select My outgoing Server (SMPT) requires authothentication
  15. Select Log on using:
  16. In User Name: Enter your email such as youremail@lowellgirls.net
  17. In Password: Enter the password given to you or your recent one if you changed it.
  18. Make sure Remember password is Selected
  19. Click on the Connection Tab
  20. Ensure you select the internet connection you will be using.
  21. Click OK
  22. Click Next
  23. Press Finish
  24. Congratulations. To ensure everything works well, try sending yourself an email.
